In line with our reviews of The Karate Kid franchise, I dove into The Karate Kid Part 3. The third movie in the series, it was an enjoyable addition to the stories of Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi. So without further adieu, here is our review of The Karate Kid Part 3!

The Good of The Karate Kid Part 3

The bad guy of The Karate Kid Part 3 returns us from the story of Miyagi in Japan and brings it back to Reseda, California and the big bosses there. Thomas Ian Griffith played Terry Silver, a business man and karate master that shows early on that he is a snake in the grass.

What I think the best part of The Karate Kid Part 3 was the new type of struggle LaRusso had to go through. After two movies of wanting to fight, this time, Daniel LaRusso does not want to fight. He isn’t interested in defending the All-Valley Karate title after some coaching from Mr. Miyagi. LaRusso is forced to decide weather or not fighting is worth it anymore. The movie also shows why LaRusso loves bonsai trees in the new Cobra Kai series.

Another great thing about the movie is we actually see Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi’s relationship strained with the mental warfare from Terry Silver. We know LaRusso is like a son to Miyagi but there is a point in the movie that we see just how much Daniel-san means to Miyagi in a heartbreaking way.

The Bad of The Third Movie

I felt like part three was a step back from the first two movies. While the first movie is the strongest in the series, the second wasn’t a huge step back. I feel like the third had some problems that the first two didn’t suffer from.

Terry Silver was a breath of fresh air as far as motivations go but at times he was a bit over the top. I get that the movie needed to up the stakes for the life and death situation from the second movie, but Silver had that maniacal laugh that you get in spoofs about bad guys. There was a point in the movie that Silver was trying to get out of trouble with the law and he simply said he would pay them off. It was heavy-handed and forced, but that’s not a knock on Griffith’s performance, it was a writing issue.

Overall Thoughts: 6.5/10 – Still a Fun Watch

The Karate Kid Part 3 was still a fun movie, despite the issues with the main baddy in the movie. Fans of the first two editions of The Karate Kid will enjoy the third for what it is, a continuation of the story of LaRusso and Miyagi.

I give the third movie a 6.5/10 and the lowest score of the franchise so far. But that said, my scoring isn’t really linear and a 6.5 is more middle of the pack than close to bad. The Karate Kid Part 3 is a great movie and all Karate Kid fans should watch, especially with the rumored return of Terry Silver in Cobra Kai Season 4.
