Mayweather-McGregor: The Fight We Want, Not the Fight We Deserve

The late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs once said, “People don’t know what they want until you show them.”

People wanted Palm Pilots with a stylus. People wanted keyboards on phones. People wanted a faster horse instead of an automobile.

People wanted Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.

In all fairness, I am an avid UFC and MMA fan and a big Conor McGregor fan. He’s done great things for the sport and gained more attention, hopefully bringing in more talent.

I wanted Mayweather-McGregor. An epic clash in boxing, the biggest combat arena in the world. I want Conor to put that “1″ in Floyd’s loss column.

But, let’s be frank. Conor McGregor has just above a puncher’s chance against Floyd Mayweather, an all time great in boxing. This is the equivalent of the one win Cleveland Browns taking on the Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots, in a “real championship.” Both the Browns and McGregor only stand a chance mathematically.

The Mayweather McGregor Spectacle

We, as boxing and MMA fans, don’t want Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor the boxing fight. We want Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor the press event, trash talk, and weigh-ins. We want the drama. We want the back and forth. We will buy the PPV. We will watch Floyd duck and dodge Conor’s haymakers. We will watch Floyd’s pitter-patter punches not affect Conor for 12 rounds, but ultimately secure the victory for Money Mayweather.

Now Floyd has trouble with southpaws, which is how Conor fights. Floyd has been out since 2015, and ring rust is a real issue, as well as age. Will Father Time be the real fight Floyd has ahead of him?

I hope I’m wrong. I hope Conor puts down Floyd Mayweather with the shot heard ‘round the world. But, if we’re being honest, I doubt it ever happens.
